TECHNICAL PROGRAM & AGENCY PRESENTATIONS:
DISASTERS AND DISASTER MITIGATION
Disasters can be caused by nature (earthquake, hurricane, tsunami), by accident (BP oil spill) or by people on purpose (terrorism). Our responsibility, as engineers, is to apply what is learned from these events to mitigate future damage and injury. This past January, Steven Baldridge joined a team of engineers from the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute to assess the damage in Haiti caused by a 7.0 earthquake. Seven weeks later, Chile was hit by an 8.8 earthquake and subsequent tsunami. Ian Robertson and Gary Chock were on site to observe the aftermath. Steve, Ian and Gary will share their experiences and assessment of the infrastructure damages.
Additionally, we'll get a perspective from our government agencies on the social implications of disaster mitigation and the expectations of designing for disaster mitigation in public works infrastructure as well as other related innovative topics. Check our website HYPERLINK "http://www.seaoh.org" www.seaoh.org for program updates.
EXHIBITS
In conjunction with the technical program there will be an exhibit area in the adjoining room displaying the latest innovations and technology in structural materials and manufactured products. Participants will be able to interact with industry representatives and gather technical information on various structural related products and services. It is an opportunity to find out what’s new and how it can best work on your project.
COMPANION ACTIVITIES
During the technical sessions, spouses and guests will be able to participate in various activities provided by the Hilton Hawaiian Village. The fitness center is open to all Hilton Honors club members. Free to sign up!
The resort offers many activities around the property and all sorts of beach activities. Relax at the Mandara Spa, offering facials, massages and body wraps. For these activities, inquiries and arrangements should be made directly with the hotel.
Special activity: The 2nd Annual CCPI vs. SEAOH Outrigger Canoe Race! Paddlers needed…sign up with Tom Arnott. See you on the beach Saturday afternoon.
